The 2016 polls are officially open today (right here) but if you’re still struggling for some #votespiration to get your ballot shipshape, take a cue from the people behind some of the biggest and best songs of the year.
We hit up 19 artists for their Hottest 100 votes and decided to break it all down into a handy genre guide to help you whittle down your own Top 10. Jump in below and head to the shiny new Hottest 100 site for the full lists from:
*deep breath* Flume, A.B. Original, Montaigne, Violent Soho, Tash Sultana, Matt Corby, MØ, Tkay Maidza, Porter Robinson, Banks, Amity Affliction, Alison Wonderland, The Rubens, Illy, Broods, Glass Animals, Julia Jacklin, Sampa The Great, and Remi *deep exhale*
Aussie Music
If you love your tunes homegrown, then take it from 2015 Hottest 100 heroes The Rubens, who’re backing J Award winner D.D Dumbo to take out this year’s poll with his single ‘Satan’.
“Everything about it just makes ‘Satan’ THE BEST song I’ve heard this year. He’s got great guitar tone, he did it all himself… I really love him!”
Fellow J Award contender Montaigne has reserved her coveted #1 for “Australia’s best kept secret” Dreller, with ‘Control’.
“He deserves much more attention than he’s getting… I became addicted to this song upon first listen… His other songs are shit-hot too. GET ON IT PEOPLE!”
Tash Sultana has a very soft spot for Julia Jacklin‘s ‘Pool Party’. “I really like Julia Jacklin’s take on music. It’s something new and really resonates with me.”
Sampa The Great’s saved her top vote for her ‘For Good’ rhyming partner Remi and his soulful jam ‘Lose Sleep’ ft. Jordan Rakei.
“With hard hitting lyrics that sound almost like a realisation rather than a song, it really feels like I’m listening to pages from Remi’s diary. The powerful soft vocals of Jordan are the calm through the storm. They’re captivating and smooth enough to let you know although these harsh realities are true, we keep pushing through.”
Hip Hop
Porter Robinson’s a young gun of the electronic scene but surprisingly, his favourite record of the year came from Chance The Rapper. “‘Same Drugs’ was the standout for me. It’s my exact sensibility right now with chords and instrumentation, and the emotion hits me juuust right!”
Tkay Maidza doubles down on the Chance love by selecting Kanye West‘s ‘Ultralight Beam’ as her best of 2016.
“Kanye West was one of the main reasons I started writing, and this song speaks to me – it’s about fighting your demons and doing what you were born to do. Chance kills it, it’s one of my favourite verses from him, and the choir vocals are epic in the way they’re layered. They add a new dimension to the song that really makes you feel the emotion in the track.”
A.B. Original’s voting sheet puts the rap in rap sheet, reppin’ Hilltop Hoods, Drapth, Snoop, Run The Jewels, but they reserve the #1 spot for Birdz‘ ‘Black Lives Matter’.
“Birdy is such a talented MC and he’s tackling such a difficult subject to talk about. It’s easy to get lost in ‘Black Lives Matter’ when it’s across the pond, but when it comes home, it’s a hard issue to deal with. I feel like Birdz put it best in this tune, and it’s just such a banger – up and down.”
Electronic
If you’re the kind of person constantly checking the ‘Is It A Banger?’ checklist, we direct to you the maker of such fine drops, Flume, who’s top tuna of 2016 (as we know) is ‘Bodhrán’ by Bonzai, the Irish producer-performer who opened on Flume’s Euro tour.
“There’s something really fresh about the rhythm in this track. I can’t wait to hear what she does next!”
Illy saved a spot for ‘Messiah’ by M-Phazes x Alison Wonderland after hearing the producer work on the joint all year. “I loved it from the first listen, and am so psyched to see how everyone reacts to it. Al is obviously one of the biggest names in Australian music, and Phizzle is the best producer in the country – what’s not to like?”
Alison Wonderland herself has given the top plug to UK producer Mura Masa and his A$AP Rocky-assisted groove ‘Love$ick’. “Everything about this track makes me feel good and it’s still on repeat for me.”
Rock
Violent Soho are connoisseurs of loud guitars, so you know their mosh-friendly picks are top notch. Dunies, DZ, Smithies all get a look-in but “the title of Australia’s Best Punk Rock Band” goes to Luca Brasi and their song ‘Say It Back’.
“Hooky guitar lines and passionate lyrics delivered with perfect conviction, you couldn’t ask for anything more! Lots of love for these guys and they deserve every vote out there. They’re simply the best and the most legit Tassies since Dave Boon!”
The Amity Afflicton trumped for their tour buddies Trophy Eyes with ‘Heaven Sent’.
Vocalist Joel Birch says: “I was lucky enough to get this album from them a little early, and that hasn’t stopped me from still playing it daily several months later. It was tricky to pick a favourite from their album, but ‘Heaven Sent’ is a beautiful track, catchy and a little bit dark – it’s everything I love about music, wrapped into one song. The Amity Afflicton trumped for their tour buddies Trophy Eyes with ‘Heaven Sent’.

Taking to the (much) lighter and indie side of the rock spectrum, Julia Jacklin’s been rinsing her ears with Whitney‘s track ‘No Woman’.
“I heard this song a while ago and then got the chance to tour with Whitney for a month. I thought it was a great song back then – but after hearing them play it night after night, I think it’s my favourite song of the year.”
If you like you’re rock arty and not very rock at all, then follow Glass Animals’ lead. They’re in love with Radiohead‘s comeback track ‘Burn The Witch’
“The way it was released, with the lyric postcards being sent out to fans first alongside little video clips, is also very clever and thoughtful. You don’t get that kind of depth behind a release too often these days. But more than anything – it’s just a beautiful song with a brilliant arrangement and production that manages to sound totally fresh, yet totally Radiohead. Well done boys…again.”
Weird n’ groovy
Award-winning Kiwis, Broods, have some deliciously funk tastes as it turns out. They fave track of 2016 was Kaytranada‘s ‘Lite Spots’. Caleb Knott says:
“This was actually a song that I stumbled across while listening to a playlist. I thought, ‘what the hell is this?’ As soon as the beat came in I couldn’t stop listening. After then I spent the next couple of months in my room trying to make music like Kaytranada.”
MØ likes her some out-there pop, and AlunaGeorge‘s ‘I’m In Control’ totally fits the bill. “Loooooove this tune SO MUCH. I remember when I heard it for the first time – I was just dying over how cool I thought it was. I can’t stop dancing and feeling myself once that drop hits. It’s so fucking cool and perfect.”
As for flutey funk roots rogue Matt Corby, Terrace Martin‘s ‘Curly Martin’ “is just one of the most musical things I’ve heard this year.”
BANKS says her fave song changes from day-to-day but Hottest 100 voting day, it’s gotta be BADBADNOTGOOD‘s ‘In Your Eyes’ ft. Charlotte Day Wilson.
“It is so dreamy and her voice soothes me. This song is just timeless and uplifting. I’m a huge fan.”
Last but not least, Remi has some choice words about ‘Come Down’ by Anderson.Paak. “He’s the GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT.
